Due to our immense love for our oceans and beaches, we will be donating 10% of our profits to the Surfrider Foundation. Surfrider is a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting our beaches, oceans, and waves so we can keep enjoying all the beauty our shores have to offer. The Surfrider Foundation is a team is a community of activists and environmental experts who work together on various preservation efforts from stopping offshore drilling and reducing pollution, to beach access and coastal preservation.
They They combine knowledge with change. By focusing on ongoing scientific research and taking a deep look at the major threats that our shores face, they seek to understand the deepest issues and push for much needed changes in pollution, beach access and beach protection!
Even the most savvy beachgoers can misplace a straw when the wind picks up. Or maybe you’ve dropped your shades in the water. Either way, beaches have a tendency to collect debris. And much of it can be harmful to the marine environment. This is why Surfrider started the project RAP or Rise Above Plastics. The goal is to reduce, reuse, or recycle our plastic waste.
Surfrider isn’t just a strong voice against bad practices. They also speak in support of better alternatives. They support renewable energy that doesn’t threaten the ocean life. They urge Congress to fund the National Ocean Policy.
With the shrinking beaches and rising seas, our shorelines are slowly being depleted in some areas. But Surfrider is dedicated to preserving our coasts through its Coastal Preservation Initiative, the shorelines are now being protected through expansion and reinforcement efforts.
The Texas chapters of The Surfrider Foundation, for example, are helping in restoring lost sandbanks and establishing setback lines for structures constructed on the beach. The Pacific Northwest chapters are working hard to fight the issues of ocean acidification and extreme erosion. In Florida, Surfrider has successfully helped in reducing state subsidies for coastal development in high-risk areas.
Beach AccessOne of their campaigns was in 2013 when Surfrider fought against Open Martin’s Beach for cutting off its public access, locking the gate leading to the beach road, and hiring security guards to keep the public off. In 2014, Surfrider received a favorable ruling which granted free access as a public beach.
Surfrider isn’t just about beach access, though. Most of us prefer to have the water we surf, swim and play in to be clean. Surfrider is working hard to make sure our waters stay pure.
Through their Clean Water Initiative, Surfrider has been protecting water resources and keeping the ocean from being polluted by industrial and agricultural runoff.
With solutions like the Blue Water Task Force, they test water quality and provide critical information about possible pollutants to the beach communities. They help in raising awareness of the dangers of pollution, and work with the local community to keep the water clean.Their Ocean Protection Initiative focuses on saving the waters from deeper threats. Oil-drilling threatens the ocean and degrades the health of the ecosystem. The team fights policies that challenge the offshore welfare of animal life and everything oil drilling threatens.
If you are blown away by how much Surfrider does in helping our lovely beaches and ocean, so are we. That is why it is a no-brainer picking them as our donation channel of choice. With your help, we hope to be able to contribute greatly to improving our beach life.
